About The House (s6/e11)

On Site – Crowleys
Meet Carolina and Denis Crowley, – Again. We first visited this couple and their young children a few years ago now. The were embarking on extensive restoration work at the time. When we finished documenting their story, lots of work had been completed, however they weren’t completely finished. Denis originally bought the house with his brother in 1985. Those kind of inner city terraced houses were very good value at the time but they didn’t have the money to restore it so they just patched it up as well as they could at the time. The house dates back to the 1940’s and was leaky, damp and uninhabitable when the Crowleys first arrived back in Ireland. They had £80,000 to spend on the refurbishment and they did receive financial help and advice from the Dublin city council conservation grant scheme, mainly to help repair the roof. This funding programme is vital to help people who own protected structures. It means that they won’t have to cut corners on essential maintenance due to financial constraints. The challenge with a house like this is to create a bright and airy modern family home while maintaining the heritage of the building.
We return to the Crowleys this week to see how they are settled in now that the job is finally finished

Child Safety in the Home
Childhood injuries are a reality, but they need not be a constant source of worry and stress to parents and childminders. Research shows that 15, 000 children are admitted to hospital each year, and that 75 children actually die as a result of injury. What is even more surprising is that research shows that 9 out of 10 non intentional injuries to children could be prevented.

This item looks at what changes in approach are necessary for parents, and those who look after children in their home, in order to reduce the risks of our children suffering injuries. Children need to explore the world around them in order to learn, but they do not have an awareness of danger. The risk of injury depends greatly on the development stage of the child, what may be fine for a child of 5 could be of great danger to a child of 3. The challenge is to keep our children safe inour homes and gardens without wrapping them in cotton wool. We take a look at some of the best ways to approach this problem.
